齿轮马达具有以下特点：
(1)进回油通道对称，孔径相同，以使正、反转时性能一样。
(2)采用外泄漏油孔，一方面因为齿轮马达回油有背压，另一方面因为齿轮马达正、反转时其进回油腔也互相变化。如果采用内部泄油容易将轴端油封冲坏。所以齿轮马达好采用外泄漏油孔。
(3)对于轴向间隙自动补偿的浮动侧板的结构，必须适应正、反转时都能工作的要求，同时困油卸荷槽也必须是对称布置的结构。
(4)使用滚动轴承较多，主要是为了减少摩擦损失，改善启动性能。
